Digital X-Rays

Digital radiography (digital x-ray) is the latest technology used to take dental x-rays.  This technique uses an electronic sensor (instead of x-ray film) that captures and stores the digital image on a computer.  This image can be instantly viewed and enlarged helping the orthodontist detect problems easier.  Digital x-rays reduce radiation 80-90% compared to the already low exposure of traditional dental x-rays.

Are Digital X-Rays Safe?

We are all exposed to natural radiation in our environment.  Digital x-rays produce a significantly lower level of radiation compared to traditional dental x-rays.  Not only are digital x-rays better for the health and safety of the patient, they are faster and more comfortable to take, which reduces your time in the office.  Also, since the digital image is captured electronically, there is no need to develop the x-rays, thus eliminating the disposal of harmful waste and chemicals into the environment.

3-D Cone Beam Volume Scan

Dr. Frank will be sending you to a specialized dental imaging center for 3-Dimensional (3-D) orthodontic imaging.  This session will provide a complete 2-Dimensional (2-D) and 3-D set of diagnostic records.  The images will provide the information needed to properly diagnose your current status and plan your orthodontic treatment.  Traditional orthodontic images are flat, 2-D views that contain inaccuracies such as magnification, distortion and superimposition.  Traditional radiographic pictures can overlap and hide important dental structures like unerupted and extra teeth, making it difficult to see the anatomy as it exists in nature.

A 3-D cone beam image is produced by a film-less digital x-ray scanner that is specially designed for scanning the face, teeth and jaws.  A scanner rotates around the patient and gathers complete 2-D and 3-D information in seconds. This simple process provides the ability to completely and accurately visualize your jaws, teeth and related anatomy. This will provide information about concealed structures like hidden teeth, missing teeth, jaw irregularities, bite variances and facial asymmetries.
